Multicasting
The killer application of HD Radio technology for the FM band is multicasting – the ability to broadcast additional programming simultaneously with the main program service within the station’s current bandwidth. The configuration of the various multicast channels can be set by the broadcaster to support the required audio quality and robustness of the associated programming. For instance, a broadcaster might choose a multicast channel with higher throughput for a music program, while allowing speech to be broadcast with reduced throughput.
To make sure your multicast channel is broadcasting properly, please review our Level Alignment and Audio Processing sections.
Many content companies are offering services specifically for multicast channels, including:
- ABC Radio Networks
- Jones Radio Networks
- Westwood One
- NPR
- Custom Channels
- BlueStreak Media
- Premiere Radio Networks
