Q: What is the HD Radio™ application?

A: The HD Radio app works in conjunction with the Radio Shack HD Radio accessory and provides local HD Radio and analog FM radio reception, and allows you to easily bookmark your favorite stations.  We have designed it to take advantage of the best features of the iPhone and iPod touch.

Q: How do I download the HD Radio application?

A: There are two ways to download the application, which we are offering as a free download.  (Your mobile phone rate plan will determine what charges you may incur to consume content via the application.)

(1) On your iPhone or iPod touch, click the icon for the Apple App Store.  Hit the search tab in the bottom navigation and type in “HD Radio.”   Click on the search result for the “HD Radio” application; once that page loads, you’ll be presented with a button that says “free.”  Clicking the “free” button will reveal an “install” button. (You’ll be prompted to enter your iTunes store password.)

(2) Go to the home screen of the iTunes application on your computer and click the “App Store” link in the navigation in the top of the left column.  Type “HD Radio” into the search box in the upper right hand side of iTunes. Find the “HD Radio” iPhone application in the results and click it.  You will see the HD Radio logo and an application description along with a button to “Get App.”  Click this button to download the application to iTunes.  When you next synch your iPhone or iPod touch, the application will be transferred to your mobile device.

Q: What devices will it work on?

A: The HD Radio app will work on all versions of the iPhone and the iPod Touch.  The HD Radio app requires that an HD Radio accessory is attached to the iPhone or iPod Touch. Radio Shack carries HD Radio accessories.

Note for users of the First Generation iPod Touch: When listening to an audio stream, you can change the volume by tapping and holding the speaker icon found on the Tune screen.  A dialog will popup where you can change the volume.

Q: What features does the HD Radio app have?

A: The HD Radio app, along with the HD Radio accessory, enables you to listen to your favorite local radio stations with your iPhone or iPod Touch.  Many of your favorite radio stations are broadcasting using HD Radio technology.  HD Radio technology allows you to listen to higher-quality sound than is available from traditional radio channels, as well as access additional programming through HD2 and HD3 multicast channels from many of your favorite local FM radio stations at no extra cost.

The HD Radio app controls the accessory and makes use of all of the fantastic features of the iPhone OS to bring you a unique radio listening experience.  The user interface is very intuitive and simple, yet very powerful.  Most things in the user interface are interactive.  When in doubt, tap it!

You can save your favorite radio streams for easy access (tap the star in the top right corner of the screen in the Listen tab).  You can access your Favorites two ways.  First by tapping the center button of the tuning wheel in the Listen tab.  The wheel will change and the center button will say Favorites.  Rotate the wheel to scroll through your Favorites list.  Second by selecting the Favorites tab and selecting your stream from the list of your favorites.  You can also back through your listening history using the Back button (above and left of the wheel).

The app presents the HD Radio streams available on the tuned station and is easy to navigate.  When an HD Radio station is tuned, tap the station frequency to open up the Station Information screen where all available HD Radio streams are presented along with what is playing on each stream.  Tap the stream that you would like to hear to tune to that stream.

The application displays information about the currently-playing song.  Tap the song information in the middle of the screen to open the Song Information screen.  Here you will see song name and artist information (where available from the station).  In this screen you can tag the currently-playing song for later purchase on iTunes using iTunes Tagging.  You can also let people know what you are listening to and what you think of it via email, Facebook and Twitter from the Song Information screen.

Q: Can I pause, fast forward and rewind audio streams?

A: You can listen to live streams.  The app cannot pause, rewind or fast-forward or record the stream.

Q: Do I need to register to get the
HD Radio application?

A: No.  Registration is not required to use the application.

Q: Does the application have ads in it?

A: No, the app does not have ads in it.  The broadcasters have ads in the streams, but the app does not have additional ads.

Q: Can I make a phone call, or send a text message, while using the HD Radio application?

A: The iPhone operating system does not allow for “backgrounding” between phone or text messaging on the one hand, and an application such as the HD Radio app on the other.  Thus, initiating or receiving a call will force you out of the application temporarily.  Under most conditions, you will be returned to the app once you have concluded calling or texting; however, you will have to restart any audio that you might have been playing. Receiving a text message will not disrupt the audio in the HD Radio app, but if you click Reply or Slide to View, the HD Radio app will be terminated and you will have to restart the HD Radio app to return to listening to radio.

If you want to listen to a long program and do not want to be interrupted by phone calls, you can only do this in a Wi-Fi area by turning on Airplane mode, turning on WiFi and connect to the WiFi network.

Q: Can I read/listen to content offline or in Airplane Mode?

A: Yes, you can.  The accessory contains an HD Radio receiver and so can receive HD Radio streams (when they are available) without any dependency on the iPhone or iPod Touch’s cellular or wireless network connections.

Q: Can I use the HD Radio iPhone app while traveling in other countries?

A: HD Radio broadcasts are currently available in the United States.  As such, the accessory, and therefore the app, are intended for use in the United States.
