iBiquity Digital Applauds Mexico’s Move Toward

Columbia, Maryland – May 18, 2007 – iBiquity Digital today commended Cofetel, Mexico’s Federal Telecommunications Commission, for a proposal that, when approved, will allow radio stations along the country’s northern U.S. border to voluntarily begin broadcasting with HD Radio technology.  The proposal applies to stations located within 200 miles of the border.

Mexico is poised to join a rapidly expanding list of countries around the world that are leveraging HD Radio technology to transition from analog to digital broadcasting and, in the process, revitalize the airwaves with exciting new content options,” said iBiquity Digital President and CEO Robert Struble.  “We look forward to working with our partners to provide Mexican AM and FM broadcasters with a seamless and cost-effective solution for their digital radio needs.”

Unlike other digital broadcast technologies, HD Radio technology does not require the allocation of additional spectrum, thereby allowing governments, broadcasters and consumers to seamlessly upgrade from analog to digital.  Given these advantages, it is little surprise that the HD Radio system is being or has been tested in more than a dozen countries throughout the world, including Argentina, Australia, Bosnia, Brazil (where several dozen HD Radio stations are on the air), Canada, Czech Republic, France, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, Poland, Switzerland, Thailand, Ukraine, and others.  There are also nearly 1,300 HD Radio stations on the air in the United States.

International HD Radio testing and adoption has accelerated in recent months as evidenced by the following developments:

  • March 2007 – More than 70 executives from the automotive, broadcast, data content, and semiconductor industries participate in the HD Radio Forum held in Cologne, Germany.
  • Feb. 2007 - R.V.R. Elettronica becomes the first licensed HD Radio broadcast equipment manufacturer in Europe.
  • Nov. 2006 - Brazilian broadcasters form the "Brazilian Alliance for Digital Radio" to promote and support the deployment of HD Radio technology in that country.
  • Oct. 2006 - Chilean broadcast equipment manufacturer Continental Lensa becomes the first licensed HD Radio broadcast equipment manufacturer outside of North America.

About HD Radio

Nearly 1,300 AM and FM radios stations, available to approximately 80% of the U.S. population, are using HD Radio technology to transmit digital audio and data to their listeners.  Beyond delivering dramatically improved sound quality over analog, digital HD Radio technology allows stations to expand their programming via HD2 multicast channels.

Over 600 stations today are using HD2 channels to broadcast fresh new music and news formats, showcase young artists and local bands, air non-English language programming, and more.  Other HD Radio applications include text and graphics content shown on receiver displays and delivery of real-time traffic updates.  HD Radio receivers are available from more than two dozen manufacturers.
