HD Radioâ„¢ Technology Debuts In Romania
Baia Mare, Romania – 27 October 2008 – iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio™ technology for AM and FM audio and data broadcasting, the European HD Radio Alliance (EHDRA) and 2M Prima Telecom, a leading Romanian engineering firm, announced today that the first demonstration of the digital HD Radio system occurred on October 23 and 24 in Baia Mare, Romania.
The HD Radio signal was broadcast from FM station “Radio Impact” 96.9MHz which offered its main station in digital as well as two multicast digital channels. Approximately 100 broadcast industry leaders from Romania and neighboring countries attended the forum, conducted by the three entities to bring Romanian broadcasters and government officials up-to-date on the HD Radio system, the in-band, on-channel digital AM/FM broadcasting technology that is gaining momentum around the world. Both transmission equipment and receivers were demonstrated.
Presenters included Wendell Longergan from transmission equipment manufacturer Nautel; Markus Ruoss co-owner and technical director of Sunshine Radio Sweden and EHDRA General Secretary; Hal Kneller from iBiquity Digital; Andriy Karpiy General Director of First Ukrainian Radio Group and EHDRA’s Vice Chairman; and Joze Caf , Director Elti D.o.o. Slovenia.
George Pletea of 2M Prima Telecom commented, “We were pleased with the enthusiastic response to our HD Radio presentation. This is a first step here in Romania. We look forward to future tests and, hopefully, implementation of this digital technology which will allow broadcasters to elegantly upgrade from analog to digital without disruption of their current analog services. It’s time to upgrade, and with a little help from the authorities, we are prepared to do that.”
HD Radio technology offers AM and FM radio broadcasters and listeners worldwide a seamless solution for a digital transition. By utilizing existing channel allocations and broadcast infrastructure, the technology offers an affordable transition for broadcasters, an efficient solution for regulators and maintains existing analog services while listeners upgrade to digital receivers. In addition to the superior audio quality and reliability it brings existing broadcaster services, HD Radio technology enables additional audio and data services that will keep AM and FM radio vital now and in the future.
The ITU (International Telecommunications Union) recognized HD Radio technology as Digital System C (Recommendation ITU-R BS.1114) and the AM HD Radio system as IBOC DSB system below 30 MHz (Recommendation ITU-R BS.1514), giving world-wide credibility to these systems from a regulatory standpoint. In the U.S., where there are already over 1,800 HD Radio stations on the air, the HD Radio system is the only technology approved by the Federal Communications Commission for digital AM and FM broadcasting. HD Radio adoption continues to grow worldwide. Systems are operating in more than 10 countries and over 50 stations around the globe.
