The Race for the Dashboard Is On!

Bob Struble's Latest Web Column: How
HD Radio™ Technology Can Help AM/FM Compete
in the Race for the Automotive Dashboard

  • What: In his latest Web column, iBiquity Digital Corp. President and CEO Bob Struble discusses why AM/FM radio can no longer take for granted its legacy position in the fight for the new-age digital dashboard. With dozens of technologies for consumers to choose from in their vehicles, the broadcast medium needs to step it up!
  • Why: A decade ago, AM/FM radio was the sole source of information and entertainment for drivers and passengers alike. That is no longer the case as the modern car has become a virtual consumer electronics playground. While AM/FM radio still remains a fundamental part of the driving experience, it is no longer the only choice. As the competition has increased for the dashboard, AM/FM has evolved into a new engine powered by HD Radio Technology that can supercharge broadcaster efforts — a digital broadcast pipe to consumers in their cars.
  • How: The listening experience has already been upgraded through a robust audio sound and a diverse new set of programming choices found on more than 1,100 HD2 /HD3 Channels. (Note to broadcasters: Keep those local channels showcasing compelling, unique flavors coming! Oh, and don’t forget to promote them.)
  • Those walking the 2010 International Consumer Electronics show floor in Vegas will get a sneak preview of commercialized HD Radio Advanced Services: real-time traffic, image support (i.e. album art, station branding, and advertiser-generated images). And, in a major announcement, Ford has announced the industry’s first factory installed implementation of iTunes Tagging.
  • Simply put, Struble stated: “The digital race for the dashboard is in full swing … Together, we can work to get that checkered flag.”
  • When: NOW! January 4, 2010
