MEDIA ALERT: Bob Struble’s Latest Web Column:

“AM/FM Radio in an Internet Everywhere World”

Long-term Broadcast Competitiveness and the Limitations of Internet Radio

What:

Coming off a highly successful 2010 International CES Show, iBiquity Digital Corp. President and CEO Bob Struble reflects on radio’s competitive landscape. His latest Web column takes a closer look at Internet radio – a new AM/FM rival for listeners and share of ad dollars, but a service that “cannot and will not replace over-the-air broadcast radio.”

Why:

Economics. That’s right; Internet radio’s economics don’t make dollars and cents as a replacement for AM/FM. Internet radio is a valuable and powerful service, but network usage requirements will not allow it to support mass market listening. And by mass, Mr. Struble means the 235 million AM/FM listeners that broadcasters routinely serve.

How:

The broadcast radio advantage is in cost and distribution efficiency. Mr. Struble writes that “an AM/FM radio station can support an infinite number of users within its coverage area. The broadcast cost is basically fixed and relatively low, and there is no incremental cost to add listeners. This is the ultimate efficiency of a one-to-many broadcast architecture.”

Mr. Struble concludes: “Internet radio is on the growing list of radio competitors, and is a driver for broadcasters to make AM/FM even better by … creating compelling programming, addressing the local audience, and promoting their product like crazy. And yes, by upgrading to a digital broadcast infrastructure using HD Radio Technology.”
