Mercedes-Benz Is First Luxury Brand To Make HD Radio™ Technology Standard Across North America
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class with HD Radio Technology is now at dealerships in the US, Mexico and Canada
Columbia, Maryland – February 13, 2014 – iBiquity Digital Corporation, the developer of digital HD Radio Technology for AM and FM audio and data broadcasting, announced this week that Mercedes-Benz of Mexico is launching the S-Class with HD Radio Technology. The 2014 S-Class is now at dealerships across North America offering the expanded audio features of digital AM and FM broadcasts delivered with HD Radio Technology.
HD Radio Technology is the digital evolution of AM and FM radio and delivers significant benefits for Mercedes-Benz drivers: crystal-clear sound quality; additional digital only local FM channels known as HD2/HD3 Channels; PSD - Program Service Data, which displays song title, artist and album name on the radio screen; HD Radio Technology is subscription free broadcast radio.
The first production vehicle equipped with HD Radio Technology rolled onto US streets in 2007. HD Radio Technology was approved as the digital standard for AM & FM broadcasting in Mexico in June 2011 and has seen a rapid rollout from automakers and radio stations across the country. There are already 13 stations broadcasting with the technology in Mexico City and 24 additional stations outside of the capital city in other areas of the country. Nearly 30% of the Mexican population has access to an HD Radio broadcast already with more broadcasters planning to support the digital rollout in the future. Canada is currently evaluating HD Radio Technology with many of its border cities already having access to HD Radio broadcasts from the US.

HD Radio Technology is available in both the United States and Mexico, with more than 2,230 digital stations on-air, and over 1,480 HD2/HD3 digital only channels that broadcast fresh new content that can only be heard with an HD Radio receiver. A sampling of the formats on these extra channels, which vary in different markets around the country, include Dance/Electronica, Bluegrass Country, Comedy, Local Music, Chill/Coffee Shop Music, South Asian, Talk, News, and Sports, to name just a few.
34 automakers have now publicly announced plans to incorporate HD Radio Technology in 170+ models by year-end with more than 80 models featuring HD Radio receivers as standard equipment. Many of those automakers already ship vehicles equipped with HD Radio Technology into Mexico.
